The Moroccan Surf Camp Experience
Would you like your Moroccan surf holiday to be at the Surf Berbere surf camp or an apartment in Taghazout? The surf camp is obviously the winner’s choice as you get treated like a “king”, taken to all the best surf spots in the taghazout area, fed the finest local cuisine, avoid all of the hassles of travelling in Morocco and finally, get dropped off tanned, lean and ready to take on working life again.
Sometimes it makes sense to rent one of our Taghazout surfer’s apartments. Taghazout is a small village with no Britannia Hotel or similarly large accommodation, however there are still charming, Moroccan alternatives. Have a look at our apartments page for more information on them (i.e. which ones have pools etc). We have selected the most reliable, value for money “surfer rentals” in the whole Taghazout area to make sure that you have a wholly enjoyable surfing holiday.
Just send us an enquiry for the dates and apartment you are interested in. We can organize hire cars so you will still be able to get to Tamri, Immsouane and Boilers – again, just put it in with the enquiry form. Booking your holiday in Taghazout with Surf Berbere really is as simple as we say, you just have to fill in the quick contact form, one of our team will respond within 24hrs, and you should be able to book in your Moroccan surf holiday within 24hrs of getting in touch with us via the Surf Berbere website!
Arrival & Departure
Please try and get to the camp between 9am-5pm, and feel free to leave anytime you like! We do ask you to be out your room by 11am as we may have guests arriving that same day. You may not be able to move into your room until 2pm if we’ve had guests leave that morning. If you are leaving a little bit later on in the day, just dump your stuff in the salons, use the showers, have a surf, watch a surf video on the TVs, chill on the terrace all day any time – Mi casa es su casa! If you are getting in on a late flight we can check you in (sometimes connections don’t work, flights are delayed).
Don’t worry too much about it, just let us know when you think you’re flight/bus/taxi is going to get in to Taghazout/Agadir and we will try and make sure someone is around to let you in! By far the easiest way to get to us it to use our Taxi service as they will take you straight to the surf camp at Hash Point and it will save us having to search for you around Taghazout in the dark!
Why you should stay with us for a full week?
Most people book in for the full Sunday to Sunday experience. This helps us organize your stay in Taghazout as we can structure the surf lessons (for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers). Learning to surf is tough process and takes at least a week to really see the improvements. We ensure that you surf as many of the surf breaks on the Agadir coastline, and everyone can experience the trips to places like Immouzer (paradise valley) and the Cavehouse in Tifnit. It also helps us save time booking you in and filling out everyone’s arrival forms. We are flexible and you can turn up midweek, we’ll still guarantee you will have an awesome time so don’t worry if you can’t get to Taghazout for a Sunday start. All you have to do is let us know when you are going to get into Taghazout and we will have someone ready to let you into the surf camp!
Cuisine
You will be served breakfast and dinner at the surf camp's roof terrace. Lunch will be either barbecue or sandwiches and served at the surf designation chosen for that day. Our Moroccan cooks have all worked in the Agadir Hotels as well as the local cafes of Taghazout. If you like authentic Moroccan cuisine then it just doesn't get any better than what these guys prepare! If you are worried that you won't like Moroccan food then fear not as Simo is a master of the omelettes and pizza too. If anyone is interested in learning how to cook a tagine, just ask the guys for a stand in lesson and they will be more than happy to show you the ropes! Please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements and we will do our utmost to accommodate your requirements! Why Choose Surf Berbere
We have the best reputation around town, built from providing fantastic value for money and really working to show you a great time in the surfing Mecca of Morocco! The camp caters for twenty-five people. We can stretch for larger groups. We are not trying to grow into the biggest surf camp in Morocco, just maintaining our position as the best!
Our team have been surfing their whole lives and our local knowledge is second to none. The surf camp is easily the best-located accommodation in Taghazout as it is right on the oceanfront. You only have to look at the picture on the right to see that our Taghazout surf camp is literally on the water’s edge – that photo was taken at high tide when there was a big swell, so don’t worry we are not going to get washed away! We are so close to the water that people have actually complained about the amount of noise the waves are making as they crash against Hash Point.
You just have to have a look through our photo gallery to understand why everyone is talking about us. At Surf Berbere we offer the best service, the best location, the best food and the best surf. With our new web-booking systems; hiring cars, renting apartments and booking out surf lessons through Surf Berbere could not be easier!
Going The Extra Mile
At Surf Berbere we don’t want to just offer you the standard surfing holiday of wake up, eat, surf the local breaks, eat again, party, sleep, 7 days in a row then fly home. Sure you might be happy with a nice tan and being an alright surfer. We want to get you out of the isolated bubble of a surf camp and experience some of Morocco. We want you to leave Taghazout feeling like you have been on a real “surfari”, and explored the cracks and crevices of the area, got a bit of a feel for the local Berbere culture and vibes. This is why throughout the week we try to do trips taking you a little further than the average Moroccan surf camp. We’ll show you the beautiful surfing and fishing village of Immsouane, with its huge crashing Cathedral’s beach break and its long mellow peeling right hander bay – perfect for beginners. We’ll take you south to Tifnit, a gem of the south Moroccan coast-line. Exposed and consistent breaks with lefts and rights, this deserted beach is almost guaranteed to bring you a wave. Then on the flat days we’ll take you up to the Kasbah and around the Souks.
Working With Locals
All our guides and instructors are qualified surf instructors either by the Moroccan Surfing Federation or the French Surfing Federation. In fact this year we have put them through the BSA assessment with Nick Thorn. They are locals who have all grown up surfing the area and thus have years of experience surfing Taghazout. There really is no better place to get local knowledge of the surfing in Morocco than right here at Surf Berbere. Our beginner surf lessons are structured through the week to ensure that everyone gets the most out of their surf camp holiday! The guides and instructors will work with you to ensure you get onto your feet and by the end of the week you’ll be carving up the green waves no problems. Our resident photographer will be on hand to capture those special moments!
Those with a little more experience but still wanting lessons will work more closely with our instructors. These guys can help with all aspects of surfing be it advice on wave choice, technique training for your duck dive, or help you with the more advanced maneuvers such as floaters or cut backs.
That is just the guys teaching you to surf, we run girls weeks where we have specialist BSA qualified “surfer chicks” come out to show you the ropes and all of our cooks, cleaners and administrative teams come from the local villages of Taghazout, Tamri, Immouzer and Aourir!
Beach Cleanups and Immouran Surf Association
After three years of effort Surf Berbere along with several of the local business have managed to get a regular team together to organize beach cleanups. We still have a huge amount of work to do and continued help from organizations such as Surfrider Foundation and Clean Ocean Project is hugely appreciated. We are all working towards the Green Waves project to bring together an Association capable of truly tackling this ongoing problem of pollution in the Agadir region and hopefully bring the quality of the water in the region up!
When we arrived in the area the Immouran Surf Association comprised of a shell of a building and about ten very weary local surfers who had battled long and hard to get a site ready for their local kids to surf. After years of wrangling they eventually won the right to build a surf club down at Devil’s Rock. However, without the means to kit out the surf club with boards and wetsuits, the building lay empty for over two years. We stepped in and donated a truck load of boards and wetsuits and continued donations from Surf Berbere have helped to keep this thriving little charity going for the local kids to keep them surfing!
The Surf School
On your surf holiday, we will ensure that you learn to surf from the best qualified, most experienced and respected surf instructors in Morocco. Our surf coaches are all BSA trained and from Morocco. No other surf camp in Taghazout, or Morocco can boast that!
At Surf Berbere we have very strict rules about how many people we will take to a point break. We are not interested in dumping 40 people on one spot and watching all of the locals get disgruntled as their surf session is ruined. We would prefer to break the groups up and help you learn to surf under the close guidance of your groups surf instructor. We limit groups to eight guests to one surf coach so you can be sure of some fantastic instruction.
Taghazout the Surfers Paradise
Taghazout has surf breaks for everyone. The beach breaks of Panoramas or Devil’s Rock are perfect for beginners learning to surf in safe sheltered bays. The reefs of Boilers and Mysteries give the more adventurous surfers the chance to experience the thrill of big take off’s on some pretty hairy boiling reefs. Finally, the world-class right-handers Killers and Anchors, give you the chance to stretch your legs and pump through some heavy barreling sections. We’ll defiantly find something suitable for you - whatever your standard! Our surf guides are dedicated to finding the perfect waves. Throughout your week you will visit as many of these as possible so you get a real feel of the area and the range of waves that it has to offer. Check out our Taghazout surf spots page for more info, pics and surf videos of the Taghazout area.
Surf Guiding, Surf Lessons and Beach Drop Off
The experienced surfers often want to go for the surf guiding to hit all the best spots at their peak. They want to travel up to boilers early in the morning to get the glassy offshore conditions. We don’t offer this as an online booking option, as we need to make sure that people are being realistic about their ability. On the other extreme, there are lots of our guests who are learning to surf and keen to get the basic lessons on calm, safe, sandy beaches. These guests need to opt for our surf lessons package so that we can drive them to most suitable beach for the day, give them a solid morning of surf instruction, feed everyone on the beach and then have another full afternoon of surf instruction.
Finally, we have plenty of guests that are in the intermediate phase, where they do not want to pay for surf lessons, but still want to be part of the group and get all the benefits of being taken to the best conditions. These people should opt for the “just beach drop off option”. (Ideal for the partner wanting to take photos!)
Flat Day Fun
During those rare occasions when Poseidon and Neptune don’t smile upon us and the waves cease to exist we are not left twiddling our thumbs and practicing our Eskimo rolls. We can take you off to Immouzer or as the locals call it - Paradise Valley. There is only one road in the village. The friendly inhabitants and the simple houses make it clear you are well off the beaten track. Chill out in tranquility and seclusion of the waterfalls. Take a plunge in the rock pools, or trek through the forests – something of a rarity in Morocco.
If you need a break from the physical demands of the surf, relax and treat yourself to a four handed massage at the local hammam! Want to get a few gifts for back home? We’ll take you to the Agadir Souks or if you want to see the local countryside a little more jump on a camel. Why not go for a horse ride along the beach at full gallop! We organise quad biking excursions through the dunes of the Massa game park for the petrolheads out there as well. When you arrive at the surf camp, just ask the manager for information on all of these options and we will set you on your way for your action packed surf holiday.
Surf & Yoga
How about a yoga session after a long day's surf? Our professional instructors takes sessions at the luxury apartment complex overlooking Killer Point. The gardens have views that overlook both Anchor Point and Killer Point and the sunset sessions provide the perfect way to stretch down those aching muscles. All payments for Yoga lessons are made locally to your yoga instructor for the day. Normally the lessons start at roughly £12 in the local currency and to book in just ask the surf camp manager, it could not be easier!
